The Championship
How the Formula 1 Drivers’ Title Is Decided
The World Drivers’ Championship rewards the driver who scores the most points across the full Formula 1 season. Grand Prix points are awarded to the top ten finishers, while the fastest lap no longer carries a bonus point. Sprint events provide additional opportunities to score.
Consistency matters as much as outright speed. A driver who regularly finishes on the podium can remain in contention even when a rival has more victories but also suffers retirements or low-scoring weekends. Reliability, qualifying position, race strategy, tire management, and changing track conditions all influence the championship.
If drivers finish the season level on points, countback separates them. The driver with more wins ranks ahead, followed by second-place finishes, thirds, and lower results until the tie is broken. These 2026 F1 Drivers Championship standings are updated after each completed Grand Prix or Sprint.
Championship FAQ
F1 Drivers Championship Questions
Clear answers about points, rankings, ties, and updates during the 2026 Formula 1 season.
How do Formula 1 drivers score points?
The top ten Grand Prix finishers score points, with 25 awarded for a victory and progressively smaller totals through tenth place. Sprint races award points to the top eight. A driver’s results from every eligible round are added together to create the season total shown in the standings.
Can a rookie win the World Championship?
Yes. A rookie competes under the same points system as every other driver. Winning the title requires front-running pace across varied circuits, reliable machinery, disciplined race execution, and consistent scoring over the entire calendar. Experience helps, but championship position is determined by results.
What decides a tie on points?
Formula 1 uses countback. The driver with more Grand Prix wins ranks higher. If wins are equal, officials compare second places, then thirds and subsequent finishing positions until one driver has the stronger set of results.
When are these standings updated?
Mr DCT updates the F1 Drivers Championship standings after each completed Grand Prix. Totals can later change if an official penalty, disqualification, or amended classification is issued, so the update line at the top identifies the latest race included.
