Dutch GP 2026: Zandvoort’s last Formula 1 race was decided by a radio call, not an overtake. George Russell led the Dutch Grand Prix. Mercedes told him to move over. Kimi Antonelli went through, finished second, and left the dunes 59 points clear of the man who had just handed him the position.
Lando Norris won the Dutch GP 2026. He took pole, lost the lead at the start, took it back, and beat Antonelli by 11.5 seconds across 72 laps. It lifts him to fourth in the championship on 159 points. On any other Sunday that would be the story.

Verstappen’s home farewell lasted two laps
Max Verstappen came to Zandvoort with five podiums from five home starts and three circuit records within reach. He got none of them. Before the race was two laps old, he lost the car on the exit of the banked final corner and put it into the barrier on the run to the pit straight. Red flag. Race over. Five starts, five podiums, and then nothing at all in the one that closed the book.
He called it disappointing, which is the most restrained thing anyone in orange said all afternoon. His 112 points are unchanged, and he stays sixth.
Oliver Bearman’s Haas went out a lap later with an engine failure at the exit of Turn 10. Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll also failed to finish. Arvid Lindblad picked up a drive-through penalty for a yellow-flag breach.
The three points that cost Russell second place outright
Mercedes ran split strategies at the Dutch GP 2026. Antonelli took an extra stop and came back out on fresher rubber behind his teammate. Russell was leading. The team asked him to let Antonelli by, and he did.
The Dutch GP 2026 arithmetic is small, and it is not small at all. Second place pays 18 points, third pays 15. Antonelli gained three; Russell lost three. Russell leaves Zandvoort on 183 points — exactly level with Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth in the Ferrari. Had he kept the position, he would be on 186 and clear of Hamilton in his own right.
Instead, he holds second on countback, on two wins to Hamilton’s one. That is a real position defended by a tiebreak rather than by points, and it exists because his own pit wall asked him to give up three of them.
Mercedes will argue it was the correct call, and on the championship they are almost certainly right — Antonelli is the car they are backing, and the team’s lead over Ferrari is now 87 points. But Russell is the one who has to carry it for the remaining eleven rounds.

A patched-up Red Bull scored anyway
Red Bull arrived at the Dutch GP 2026 in Zandvoort without Isack Hadjar, ruled out with a wrist injury. Liam Lawson stepped up from Racing Bulls to substitute, and Yuki Tsunoda returned to fill the seat Lawson vacated.
With Verstappen in the wall on lap two, the stand-in was the only Red Bull left running. Lawson brought it home seventh for six points — the entire team’s return from the weekend, and the difference between Red Bull finishing the day on 180 and on 186.

That’s the last one
The Dutch GP 2026 finale closed a chapter that began when the Dutch Grand Prix came back in 2021 because one driver made it commercially unmissable, and it leaves in 2026 with that driver in the barrier on lap two. The grandstand on the banking got a red flag and a stand-in Red Bull. It deserved better, and it will not get another chance.
Zandvoort keeps its circuit, its dunes and its 1985 photographs, and Norris keeps a trophy nobody will ever win again.
